Roxanna Pignolet

Yujie lab: I am a microbiology Ph.D. student in Dr. Yujie Men’s lab in the chemical and environmental engineering department. My research interests revolve around studying microbes to understand better and find solutions for sustainability challenges like environmental contamination. My current research is focused on identifying the enzymes and metabolic pathways involved in the microbial breakdown of a highly resistant class of environmental contaminants called per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). I will use a mixture of microbiology, biochemistry, and molecular biology approaches better to understand the fate of PFAS in the environment and inform future bioremediation solutions. In addition to my research, I’m also passionate about science communication. I always seek more opportunities to practice presenting, writing, and editing articles to share research with a larger community. The Plants3D program will provide valuable support and training to both help me improve my science communication skills and make impactful connections with an innovative and interdisciplinary community.
